What causes varicose veins?

In healthy veins, blood flows steadily through the veins up to the heart. Varicose veins occur when the valves in the veins have weakened and fail to contain blood flow, leading to pooling or reversal of flow. This condition is called venous reflux. The pooled blood accounts for the dark-blue or purple color as well as the bulging and knottiness of the veins.

Not only are varicose veins uncomfortable and unsightly; they can also be indicators of more serious vascular problems. Patients suffering from the discomfort or unsightliness of either varicose veins or spider veins should seek treatment to get rid of veins immediately at our leading Tampa vein clinic.

Symptoms of varicose veins include the following:

  • Ropey, bulging or knotted appearance of veins in the legs
  • Dark blue or purple "bunched-up" veins close to the surface of the skin
  • Tired or heavy limbs
  • "Restless leg" syndrome during sleep hours
  • Swelling in the legs and ankles
  • Burning, itching or throbbing in the legs

Whereas varicose veins occur primarily in the legs, spider veins can appear almost anywhere, most often near the surface of the skin in a patient's face, head, neck, chest or legs. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins have few physical symptoms but are easy to spot because of their cobwebby or "road map-like" appearance. The board-certified experts at our Tampa vein clinic work with patients from Tampa, Bradenton, St. Petersburg, Sarasota and throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties to determine whether they are suffering from varicose veins, spider veins or other vein irregularities.

Do you have these symptoms or other reasons to suspect that you have varicose veins, spider veins, venous reflux or other vein problems? To start your vein treatment as soon as possible, contact Advanced Vein & Vascular Solutions today to schedule your initial consultation.
